Community Hero assignment: Anna got a homework assignment to write a story about a community hero. We discussed lots of people, but she insisted on writing about her teacher this year, Ms. Faulkner. The first night we wrote a detailed outline all about her. The second night we were trying to get started on the paper, but Anna acted like she didn't know what she was supposed to do. I explained that she would use her outline to describe Ms. Faulker's family, hobbies, & characteristics as a hero. She looked at me over her glasses with her serious, "what in the world are you thinking mom" face and said, "Mom, Ms. Faulker is going to be the one reading this paper. I'm fairly certain that she is very familiar with herself." Well, alrightly then. Yes, you do still have to write the paper goofy girl!
Swallow Mouth: During a trip to a park to feed the ducks Anna was distraught to see a duck with a blow dart stuck in its beak. She could not enjoy herself after we saw it, the whole rest of the morning she wanted to go back to check on the duck, take its picture, email the park authorities, & protect the duck from hurting itself further. We finally flagged down a park maintenance guy who assured us that he'd called animal control. She came straight home to the computer & spent an hour typing out this story (not edited in any way by us - impressed with the spelling!)...
DUCK RESCUE by Anna Dayton
One sunny morning my mom said since we could not go to the park yesterday lets go now. So we packed up the van and went to Bear Creek park. We had some bread in the van to feed the ducks and that's what we did first. We noticed a duck with a long silver and green thing stuck in its mouth so after we were done feeding the ducks my mom said we should just play and when we are just about to leave we will go see the ducks one more time. It was very long waiting and waiting for Maelyn and Judah to get bored but after a long wait it was time to see the ducks one more time. When we got there we saw a park ranger mom said to him that the duck had something stuck in his mouth. The park ranger said he could not take it out of the ducks mouth but he will call the animal clinic soon. So we left happy because the duck was going to be ok. I called the duck Swallow Mouth. Before we left I saw all the ducks swimming in a line looking very happy even Swallow Mouth.
Here is a cell phone picture that she took - you can't really see it but the duck in the center had a dart sticking about 6 inches out of its beak. I think our sweet Anna definately has a future of caring for animals ahead of her.

Love Anna stories and I can just visualize her expression when she is letting you know that her teacher know all about herself. She is so funny.
