*** note to self - add hiking pics from Tom's phone
At the beginning of May we took our first ever "just the 5 of us" camping trip. We have always met up with family or friends in the past but we wanted to have some much needed family time & also get the kinks worked out of the new camper (aka the Beast) without distractions. Of course, there were plenty of kinks. On the afternoon that we picked up the camper Tom needed to fix the crushed plug from his last parking job... it didn't go as smoothly as planned so we were scrambling to get loaded & get Anna from school to get on the road. At the very last minute we put the weird smell in the camper, some odd water stains on the brand new king sized mattress, & an inspection of the roof all together. The vent cover above our bed had busted out in the hail storm before our covered parking spot had become available & the rain had been leaking onto our mattress for weeks. The underside was of course totally covered in mildew. GROSS. Since we were already packed to leave, we bleached it really well & tried to fan it out.
Thankfully the rest of the weekend went off without any more snags. The kids played really well together, we got to go on our first whole family bike rides since Judah had recently given up training wheels, & we did some hiking to a beautiful overlook. Successful family of 5 camping trip! When we got home we got to replace the mildewed boards beneath the bed & throw out our slept-on-for-2-weekends mattress. The Beast is never without drama.
